|A 2008 recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, an a cappella ensemble, are preserving a unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals. In 1871, the original Jubilee Singers introduced 'slave songs' to the world, songs that celebrated life, survival, and victory. Continuing that tradition, today's ensemble consists of talented vocal artists and students at Fisk University in Nashville. The local David Crockett High School's Madrigal Singers will perform in the concert as special guests. |
